In the dawn of railroading, wreck cleanups were typically handled by men and horses. The initial steam wrecking crane, a compact model with a 20-ton lift capacity, emerged in 1883. Its creator, Industrial Works of Bay City, Michigan, introduced a fully revolving version a decade later. As demand grew, Industrial Works, now known as Industrial Brownhoist, and its main rival, Bucyrus-Erie of South Milwaukee, introduced larger cranes to accommodate increasing locomotive and car weights. By World War I, 120 tons was a common size, and by World War II, crane sizes reached around 250 tons of lifting capacity.
